Stampin’ Up! Friendly Flamingo Ombre Card

Hi again! Today’s project is a Friendly Flamingo Ombre card, that uses a piece of the almost retired Oh So Ombre Designer Series Paper on its base. I’ll be sad to see this paper disappear on Monday because it has a seamless effect to it. Perfect for a lot of projects.

Today’s bird has a little more going on than some of the flamingos that I have posted in the past few weeks. With a base of Granny Apple Green and a bird stamped in Calypso Coral, the card is also very bright!

Starting with the card base, it is simply a piece of 8-1/2″ x 5″ cardstock, folded in half. A piece of Granny Apple Green DSP from the Oh So Ombre pack was cut to size. This paper is one of the freebies that you can earn during Sale-a-bration, which ends at midnight on Sunday! Earn a pack with a $60 purchase (or two packs with $120 purchase!) Before gluing it on, I cut a piece of the white ribbon from the Flowers for Every Season Ribbon Combo Pack, wrapped it around, and tied it in a knot. Then I glued it to the base.

One item that many have either missed or forgotten about is the Stitched with Whimsy Dies. They’re on page 72 of the January-June Mini Catalogue, but on the bottom of the page. If you’re looking at the cute dogs on the page, you’ll miss them. I used on of them to cut the edge of the white cardstock before gluing to the base. You’ll see these again because I have other projects ready to post that have the stitching on them.

Isn’t that stitching cute? You’re not restricted to using the dies just for rectangles and squares. Use them to ‘stitch’ one or two edges of a project for a different look.

Monsieur Flamingo, from the Friendly Flamingo stamp set, was stamped in Calypso Coral ink, and die cut with the corresponding die in the Flamingo die set. I just glued him down straight to the card.

The real trick on this card is in the colouring of the plants. I used Memento Ink and Stampin’ Blends to colour them. However, it took a bit of trial and error. I initially stamped the image using full-strength Memento ink. Once I began colouring, I realized that it was too dark for the card. In the photo it seems like it should be okay. Keep scrolling…

So, I restamped the image, but stamped it off on scrap paper before stamping it onto the cardstock. This extra step made a world of difference. Have a look at the difference between the two pieces. The dark image is the one on the top. You can see that some of the image is almost distorted because you can’t see the full colour from the Blends.

I tried colouring one of the flamingos as well, after double-stamping the image in Memento ink. Here’s my ‘test’ bird, that I was NOT happy with. I abandoned that effort very quickly, and don’t know if I’ll go back to it. The stamp is a DistINKtive one, and I think it’s better when it is inked with just one colour.

As with many projects, sometimes it takes a bit of time to achieve the look that you’re going for. Experimenting is more than fine – I find that I often create some of my most unique projects just by mixing things up.
