Stampin’ Up! Candy Canes Spotlight Card

Happy Wednesday! I have another Die Cut Spotlight card for you today. This one features the Stampin’ Up! Candy Canes Background stamp, which is a good stamp for this technique. However, I’m not entirely thrilled with this card because it doesn’t quite match what I had in my head. Let’s have a look and I’ll explain my thought process as we go along.

My original vision was to emboss the Candy Canes Background stamp onto watercolour paper, and then watercolour the candy canes for the die cut piece. Which I did. However, there were a couple of issues with this. First, it’s really hard to get a fully embossed image of this size onto watercolour paper. There are 2 more pieces of embossed paper on my stamp table right now, that have larger sections of fractured embossing. You’ll see these pop up in a bit because I’m going to repurpose them into something different.

Second, when I watercoloured the candy canes with Real Red ink, they weren’t nearly as dark as I would have liked them to be. So, I pulled out my Real Red Stampin’ Write Marker and just coloured them in. I freely admit that I was in a bit of a hurry, and just wanted to finish the card.

I stamped the sentiment from Holly Jolly Wishes onto a piece of Basic White cardstock. It really should have been stamped onto watercolour paper because it would have matched the rest of the card. Adding a bit of the pretty Real Red Sheer ribbon balances the card. A single rhinestone balances off the sheen of the silver embossing.

When you open the card, I added an extra Real Red circle behind the embossed piece. It was a good move because once again, I mounted it onto a piece of Basic White cardstock.

If I was to make this card again… I would still emboss the stamp in silver, or even just stamp it in black, but on Basic White cardstock. The image would be solid, and surface flat. Watercolour paper isn’t flat, or a bright white. Both of these distract from the card.

You may be asking yourself ‘why did Wendy post this card if she’s not happy with it?” The reason is simple. None of us make perfect cards every time. This falls into the category of ‘it’s good enough’, and the person who receives it in the mail will never know the angst that went into it. They’ll just appreciate a handmade card.
