Stampin’ Up! – Using the Potted Succulents Dies for Stenciling

Did you know that you can use the large die cut from the Potted Succulents dies for stenciling? Today’s projects combine stenciling with the new Blending Brushes to create something completely different to pop into the mail. These Simply Succulents cards have an ombre feel to them. Here are photos of both completed projects.

As you can already see, they are similar, but not because you are looking at both the positive and negative images of the die cut.

The first step in creating these cards is to die cut the large die from a piece of white cardstock. This will be your stencil. You will want to make sure that the piece is larger than the die because you’ll need to tape it to your work surface. You also need to cut the piece of white cardstock that will be coloured.

Place your cardstock on your grid paper, and add a tiny bit of adhesive behind to prevent it from moving around. Use low tack tape (I use green painter’s tape) to tape your succulents die cut to the grid paper.

Using Blending Brushes, pick up your ink and gently swoosh it in circles onto the paper. Start off the edge, and then brush the ink on. If you start right on the cardstock, you will leave a giant mark that is difficult to fix/hide.

For this card, I added the Flirty Flamingo ink first, and then added the Pretty Peacock. When you think you have enough ink on them, carefully peel back the stencil. You don’t want to rip it because you’re still going to use it! You will end up with something similar to this.

You can see that neither of these are “usable” on a card in their current form and will need to be chopped down. The piece on the left has been cut to 4-5/8″ x 3-3/8″. The one on the right was cut down to 5-1/2″ x 4-1/8″. When cutting, you will end up eyeballing it a bit, but no one will notice if you’re not completely straight. Except for you of course.

Once they coloured pieces have been chopped, you can finish your projects. The “positive” card, which is the one that has the stencil on its face, has a base of white cardstock. I sponged a bit of Multipurpose Liquid Glue to the backside and glued it down. The Potted Succulent Dies set has four different labels, and I used two of them on this card, along with a sentiment from the Simply Succulents stamp set.

Our “negative” card also has a sentiment from the Simply Succulents stamp set, and the other two labels from the Succulent Dies. I stamped the bottom label to give it a bit of something extra, and coloured the Basic Rhinestones with the dark Pretty Peacock Stampin’ Blend so they matched the card.

The end result is that I created two distinct cards, at the same time, using many of the same materials. The technique ensures that you’re not wasting something along the way. I like that!
