The Start of a Creative Wellness Journey

Today is the start of a creative wellness journey on the blog. I recently read a short article in the Life section of the Toronto Star that looked at five different sanctuaries to help find a “slice of serenity at home”. My mind began to whir, because I have been toying with the thought of combining wellness and stamping for awhile. Once I began searching for Creative Wellness, I discovered that it’s thought to be an important piece of an overall wellness plan.

I’m going to start posting articles or musings about Creative Wellness, to remind each of us (including myself!) of the need to include creativity in our lives.

The first item on the Star’s list is to have a hobby room. What’s a hobby room? It’s simply a room that is dedicated to your passion. I refer to mine as my craft room, or stamping studio. Craft room is probably a better description because my sewing machine, cross stitch supplies, paint and all of my papercrafting supplies are there. You may not see it all when you come in, (my closet is jammed full), but I know where it all is.

What do you *need* in your craft room?

A craft room doesn’t have to be a large space. You need a table to work on with a comfortable chair, storage for your supplies, and good lighting. Easy to clean floors are a good idea as well. We’ll look at some options in future posts that can help you develop and organize your space. It’s just important at first to have a space in which you can relax.

If possible, add a bulletin board to the wall. It’s a great place to post a favourite quote, pin inspirational photos, and organize ideas for current and/or future projects. It doesn’t have to be fancy.

Add a couple of favourite items that bring happiness or peace to your mind when you look at them. Anyone who has been to my home knows that I love flamingos. There are a number of them in my craft room, and they give me joy. I can’t save every single bird I see in a store, but I do keep some favourites in my stamp room.

This is just the start of our creative wellness journey. I’m surrounded by fascinating wellness books at Chapters, and will continue to post pieces every now and again to help show us the way. I have created a separate Creative Wellness page on the blog that lists the posts, and any additional resources I discover. Curious about the other four sanctuaries listed in the Star’s article? See the full article HERE. See you again soon!
