Stampin’ Up! Choosing Colours with the Flamingo Dies

It’s Flamingo Friday, and today I’m sharing how I went about choosing colours for all of the die cut flamingos that you have seen on my blog this year. First, I’m going to share two identical cards, except the colour scheme for one is the reverse of the other.

Choosing Flamingo Colours

The main colour combination on this card is Petal Pink and Calypso Coral. The colours in behind are Bermuda Bay and Pool Party. These colours are not all in the same colour family, but work really well together – in both combinations. It’s good to experiment with these styles of projects because you use everything that you cut, and often create 2 cards for the price of one. Before I delve into colour selection, here are a few additional card details:

  • The circles behind the birds were embossed with the Tasteful Textile 3D Embossing folder
  • A large Stitched Rectangle gives the card a bit of added texture
  • The rectangles at the centre of the card were run through the machine twice, embossing them with lines from the Stitched with Whimsy dies
  • Find the ‘Thank You’ stamp in the Happy Thoughts stamp set
  • Petal Pink Elegant Faceted Gems were added to the card

When the Friendly Flamingo bundle first hit my doorstep, I spent an evening playing with different colour combinations to see what would work for the birds. It’s important to do this not just for the main die cut, but also for the background.

Once I had all of my colour combos, I put them together. From left to right, these are the main colours:

  • Magenta Madness
  • Melon Mambo
  • Flirty Flamingo
  • Rococo Rose
  • Blushing Bride
  • Calypso Coral
  • Petal Pink

I found that the Magenta Madness only really worked with the black. The others are placed in pairs, and each of the monochromatic birds has a wing that was sponged with its colour. The flamingo dies do not have a specific die for the beak. I’m not bothered by this at all because I do have another manufacturer’s dies that do, and it’s a pain in the butt to glue them on. The far easier was to do this is to use the Dark Basic Black Stampin’ Blend. To add colour to his eye, glue a small piece of cardstock onto the back of his head. The photo below this one shows you what this looks like.

One last flamingo tidbit for the day… If you want to change up the colour of your bird’s legs, this is the easiest way to do it. Cut a second flamingo, in the colour that you want his legs to be. Slice off the legs, but leave a bit of the torso attached because this is where the adhesive will go. Glue them together, using the shape of the torso as a guide.

Once you have finished, match your background, and finish your project!! If you’re not sure what colour to use, remember that flamingos always look good on black.
